CODE: Debugging the Gender Gap was the first documentary Amy and I helped fund. I joined the National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT) board as chair in 2005, when the issue of the small number of women in computer science, while often talked about, wasn’t well understood.

Directed by Robin Hauser, CODE traces the history of women in U.S. tech, from Ada Lovelace and Grace Hopper through the women of ENIAC to today, and profiles successful women in the field including Danielle Feinberg (Pixar), Aliya Rahman (Code for Progress), and Julie Ann Horvath. Tribeca Film Festival premiere, April 2015. Won Best Documentary Feature at the Rhode Island International Film Festival.

Films like CODE make me optimistic that we’re not only figuring out what is going on with the gender gap in computing, but we’re having real impact on it.
